Sensory Block Magic!

Date: August 25, 2022
Time: Sensory Play
Facilitators: Jasmine, Simran K and Raveena

PROPS USED

Sensory blocks (set of wooden blocks containing any one of the following: beads, water/jelly or sand). The blocks are also in four different shapes and colors.

What was the activity?

The activity involved playing with the sensory blocks and exploring the hidden treasures within them.

Which skills were at play?

  • Creativity: Creativity was induced with different vibrant colors and the shapes of the blocks.

  • Sensorial experience: These blocks have a wooden texture that’s smooth to hold. Moreover, they offer a unique sound when shaken (water and beads blocks) and elevates visual perception.

  • Physical Development: The kids were encouraged to shake the blocks to see how the sand, water and beads shift inside the shapes and the sound that’s produced. This prompted them to maintain eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills.

  • Cooperative play: Each block had a different unique quality to them and each kid was encouraged to exchange and share the blocks so that all of them can experience those unique experiences.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

The blocks were kept in a tray and the facilitators sat with the kids in a big circle. Each block was introduced (mainly the colors and the ingredients inside the block) and then it was passed along the circle so that each kid gets a chance to explore the block. Later, the kids also indulged in exchanging the blocks with each other to enhance their play.

How did it go? (Finally!)

Sensory blocks were introduced in this class for the first time. They all seemed quite curious about the things inside the blocks. They all tried looking through the colored lens. Saanvi and Atharv Goyal also tried placing one block over the other to construct a bigger thing. Neeyansh exchanged many blocks and finally settled with blocks containing water. Yasha seemed interested in playing with the blocks containing sand and Vanya, Prisha, Hriday and Janya seemed fascinated with shaking the blocks with beads.
