Gloop Play!

Date: August 26, 2022
Time: Sensory Play
Facilitators: Jasmine, Simran K and Swechha

PROPS USED

Cornflour, food color, water and grapats.

What was the activity?

The activity involved forming gloop using cornflour and colored water. Grapats were used to make stories and build more interest in the activity.

Which skills were at play?

  • Creativity: Creativity was induced when the kids collaboratively created stories using grapats over the gloob.

  • Sensorial experience: The kids explored the soft texture of the cornflour powder and then mixed the cornflour and water with their hands. Besides, they indulged in playing randomly with the mixture, all of which induced a unique tactile and visual experience.

  • Fine Motor Skills: The kids were encouraged to mix the ingredients using their fingers. Besides, the toddlers indulged in splashing the mixture which strengthened their fine motor skills further.

  • Language and speech development: Our arthlings recognised and learnt about names of different colors and directions in which their hands moved while playing.  Also, there was verbalisation about different action verbs like “Splash the water slowly”, “Mix the cornflour with the colored water”, etc.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

The cornflour was distributed in three trays. The kids explored the texture of the powder first and then colored liquid was added to turn the mixture into a gloob. Grapats were placed inside the tray and the toddlers engaged in the play with their own will.

How did it go? (Finally!)

It has been a general observation that our toddlers participate in the sensorial experiences with utmost excitement. Radhya put cornflour over her face and indicated to do the same on the facilitator’s face as well. Later, she mixed the cornflour with water and then indulged in clapping her palms to have a splash effect. Kaira kept adding grapats over the gloob. On being inquired, she said loudly, “This is my mumma, papa and kaira!”. Similarly, Prisha, Neyansh and Hriday also participated in the pretend play with grapats. Atharv Goyal indulged in splashing the water in the tray quite fast and many kids mirrored his actions. Neyansh and Jasvi also expressed their interest in squeezing the bottle and pouring out colored water into the tray. By the end, every kids’ clothes were changed since all of them heartily coddled themselves with the gloob.
