Inside the Hula hoops!

Date: August 24, 2022
Time: Sensory Play
Facilitators: Jasmine, Simran K and Raveena

PROPS USED

Three colorful Hula hoops were used.

What was the activity?

The activity involved moving with the hula hoops, either standing inside the hoop or holding it from the outside and rotating it.

Which skills were at play?

  • Physical Development: This play involved using eye-hand and upper-lower body coordination while rotating with the hoop. Besides, gross motor skills were at play when they moved along with the rotating hoops.

  • Creativity & Imagination: The toddlers were encouraged to imagine the rotating hoop as a transport carrying them to different places. This induces them to use their abstract thinking to imagine whatever they desire.

  • Cognitive skills: Attention was one skill that was at play constantly. They were focussed in either moving inside/outside and revolving with the hoop constantly.

  • Cooperative play: The kids were prompted to cooperatively play with other peers. Eg. They were asked to make space for their friends inside the hoop while the facilitator rotated it.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

There were three facilitators and each had one big hula hoop. The toddlers were invited to move the hoop in circular motion with the facilitators, either by stepping inside the hoop or from the outside. Music was played in the background to support the fun and movements of the children.

How did it go? (Finally!)

The whole class was filled with excitement once the hula hoops were introduced. Many kids wanted to hold the hoop independently, including Atharv Gupta, Atharv Goyal and Yuvaan. The facilitators invited the kids inside the hoop and the kids held a segment of the hoop while getting rotated. Neyaansh gets fascinated by spaceships, so his hoop was imagined as one and the rotating flew them to outer space. Taksh, Kaira, Advaith, Hriday, Vanya and Neyaansh seemed to prefer staying inside the hoop whereas Atharv Gupta, Yuvaan, Radhya and Saanvi seemed to stay outside and help the facilitator rotate the hoop.
