Bob the builders!

Date: August 23, 2022
Time: Work Time
Facilitators: Jasmine and Swechha

PROPS USED

Different shaped Magnetic tiles and small table.

What was the activity?

The activity involved constructing things using magnetic tiles.

Which skills got enhanced?

  • Physical Development: This play involved constructing and deconstructing things from  scratch, like building a house, which induced the usage of fine and gross motor muscles in the toddlers. Moreover, finger muscles came quite handy when the kids had to disjoin two magnetic tiles from each other.

  • Creativity & Imagination: The toddlers were encouraged to build any structure of their choice. This gave them a space to be free and creative with the magnetic tiles.

  • Cognitive skills: The activity involved the awareness of spatial knowledge, like, “how much space would your house take?” or “are we going to build a tall tower?”, etc. Moreover, the children were using problem solving skills when they had to construct different things with specific shapes available.

  • Cooperative play: The kids were encouraged to cooperatively play with other peers. Eg. They were asked to wait for their turns if they wanted to use the similar shaped tile as their friends instead of snatching it from them.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

Magnetic tiles were kept on the small table during work-time. Facilitators sat and started engaging with different shapes while subtly inviting whoever wishes to come and play.

How did it go? (Finally!)

A lot of kids surrounded the table to play with the magnetic tiles. They are already familiar with the prop as well as with the concept of constructing something (abstract thinking was channelised a lot here). Neyansh seemed engaged in making his own house. He even drew the facilitator's attention towards his house and the cars parked outside it (both of them constructed using magnetic tiles). Kaira was doing the action of eating the square shaped magnetic tile and on enquiry as to why she was eating it, she replied, “Chocolate!”. Similarly, Taksh and Vanya were seen licking ice-creams (using one big triangle as the cone and one small triangle joined above it as the ice-cream scoop). Atharv Goyal and Taksh seemed to get attracted towards deconstructing the towers and houses as well. They were prompted to do it with care so that other kids don’t get hurt. Hriday, Aayansh, Advaith and Yasha also participated in the play.
