Welcome to Day 9 of ‘My Emotions’! The children have been practising the art of photography as a tool to understand human emotions. Today, they will create a book of facial expressions using photos of themselves!

PLANNING AND SETUP

The activity was divided into the following steps:

1. My Facebook: Happy, Sad, Angry, Excited, and Scared photos of each child were selected from the Arth Hours gallery and printed. Trays were prepared with pieces of brown card, safety scissors, glue sticks, hole punches, and ribbons for lacing.

HOW IT HAPPENED

My Facebook: The Arthlings gathered around the tables for the activity. Each child was presented with a sheet of their own pictures, showcasing five major emotions — Happy, Sad, Excited, Angry, and Scared! The educators explained that the pictures could be cut and stuck on different pages, then laced up to form a book of expressions. This signalled the introduction of an old friend — the safety scissor!
The children took pairs of safety scissors and got to work. The educators guided the children by adjusting their grip, and demonstrating the required open-and-close movement. Sanmoyee Didi told Yuvaan (Mehra) and Nitara that the scissor was like a crocodile that ate the paper, and went yum yum yum!
After this cutting session, the children used glue sticks to stick their pictures on pages made of brown card. When the glue sticks went away, the hole punches came out. The children found that the holepunches need very strong hands for operation; when necessary, the educators came to the rescue! Finally, the Arthlings laced the pages together with yellow and red ribbons to make their Facebooks.

OUTCOME AND FUTURE

By creating this Facebook, each Arthling was able to accurately visualize how their own face changes when experiencing different emotions. The children also created a memento that they can take home and keep forever!
