PROPS USED

Cupcake tray, colored papers (blue, red, pink, yellow and orange), Pom-poms, plastic trays and mini bowls.

What was the activity?

The activity involved color and number sorting using colored poms-poms and cupcake trays.

Why did we plan this activity?

  • Fine Motor Skills: This play involved picking up the colored pom-poms from the bowls and putting them into the cupcake trays in terms of colors or numbers, which may have strengthened their fine motor skills.

  • Color Recognition: The toddlers were invited to recognise different colors presented to them and asked to identify which pom-pom would go into which cupcake tray. All of this made them learn the names of basic colors that they come across in their daily life.

  • Mathematical skill: The kids were prompted to put those many poms poms as mentioned in any one section of the cupcake tray. This induced them to learn to count.

  • Cognitive skills: The kids were engaged in the act of decision making and color categorizing (which pom pom to put in which tray?) which all strengthens their cognitive skills.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

Five colors were picked out for this activity (blue, red, pink, yellow and orange). Circles of these colors were cut out that went at the bottom of each cup in the cupcake tray. One cupcake tray had one color assigned to it, subsequently, five trays were set up. Numbers were put out on those circles (1 to 6) for number sorting. Same colored pom-poms were put out in five separate plastic bowls beforehand. When the work-time call was made, kids ran towards the table and they were shown the different pom-pom and the colored circles pasted on the cupcake tray, followed by inviting them to sort the pom-pom as per colors and numbers.

How did it go? (Finally!)

The very first reaction of the arthlings towards the bowl of pom-poms was to grab them and pick as many as possible. Jasvi, Radhya, Yasha, Daksh, Krishay, Janya, Prisha, Neyansh, Ratujit, Vanya and Janya Participated in this activity. Initially, they were invited to just identify the colors and sort the pom-poms accordingly. Vanya used to clap for herself whenever she was able to identify the color correctly. Eventually, they all were asked to identify the numbers and put as many pom-poms as visible on the cupcake section. However, they weren’t able to sort numerically yet. Ratujit and Janya helped in cleaning the table in the end. Overall, it was a great way to enhance language in them in terms of different colors and numbers.
