Peel-Slice-Peel

Date: July 14, 2022
Time: Small Group
Facilitators: Simran K, Simran J, Raveena and Sifat

PROPS USED

Bananas, wooden knives, pepper and plates.

What was the activity?

The activity involved Peeling the banana and then slicing it into smaller pieces by the toddlers.

Why did we plan this activity?

  • Fine motor skills: The pincer’s grasp was strengthened in these toddlers while learning to peel the banana. Also, holding the knife and using it to cut encouraged usage of fine motor skills.

  • Self-dependent: Learning to peel bananas can symbolize a basic skill or an ability to be able to eat their own food without an adult's help.

  • Inculcating healthy food habits: These kids already love eating bananas, and by doing an activity based on one of their favorite fruits, it might have encouraged them towards a healthy snack choice.

  • Social Skills: The toddlers were encouraged to cooperate with each other while waiting for the pepper to be passed one by one.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

Bananas were cut into two halves for the toddler's convenience. Wooden Knives, a pepper shaker and empty plates were kept in the tray with the bananas before the class began.  During small group time, The kids were first introduced with the bananas and gradually when they peeled the bananas, knives were introduced and they were shown how to cut the fruit. Eventually, they all ate their bananas.

How did it go? (Finally!)

This activity witnessed the participation of all the kids present in class today. The facilitators modeled the behavior of peeling off the bananas. Some kids weren’t able to initiate the peeling and so the facilitators peeled a little bit to help them. Slicing the banana was new for them and most of them weren’t able to hold the knife horizontally. Also, They were trying to cut the slice by holding the banana in their palms. Overall, it seemed like an activity that made them learn certain skills and at the same time was a treat for the stomach!
