Foam Play!

Date: August 1, 2022
Time: Sensory Time
Facilitators: Simran J, Jasmine and Simran K

PROPS USED

Foam, Tempera paints (Red and Yellow), mini wooden containers and spoons.

What was the activity?

The activity involved exploring the senses while playing with the foam.

Why did we plan this activity?

  • Fine Motor Skills: Fine motor skills were used when the arthlings wiggled their fingers or explored the foamy texture and wooden containers with their hands and feet. Eye hand coordination also strengthened.

  • Sensory experience: Children got a chance to explore the soft texture of the foam and different colors that were mixed with them.

  • Creativity: There was a scope to expand on their creativity since they were invited to engage in free flow of movement and open-ended play with the foam. Kids pretended that the foam was ice-cream.

  • Cognitive Development: Messy play like using foam can support a child's cognitive development since it gives them the chance of problem solving and exploring one’s way through it.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

Trays were already set up in which foam was spread out and mini containers and spoons were placed. Tempera paints were added after the kids got a chance to explore the white foam first.

How did it go? (Finally!)

Foam has always been a sensory prompt that many kids enjoy playing with. Today, all the kids present, sat down to indulge their senses in an open-ended foam play. Initially, Aaradhya used her palms to spread the foam in the tray. After a while, she started spreading the foam over her feet as well. Once the red and yellow colors were added, the kids engaged in pretending the foam to be ice-cream and seemed to enjoy eating it. Hriday literally put the foam in his mouth and he was taken for cleaning post that. It was noticed that these kids are vocal about their preferences. For instance, they communicated when they wished to go for a hand-wash. Each child expressed this need in their own time.
