Colored Smudge!

Date: July 25, 2022
Time: Small Group
Facilitators: Simran K, Jasmine, Simran J and Raveena

PROPS USED

Colored chalks (Red, Green and Yellow) and black colored A-4 sheets

What was the activity?

The activity involved scribbling or making random figures using the chalk on the black sheets and then smudging the chalk using their fingers.

What skills got enhanced from this experience?

  • Fine Motor Skills:  get improved when kids learn about the appropriate grip for holding the chalk in their fingers and then manipulating it in different directions. which will help in development of pre-writing skills. Eye hand coordination also strengthens.

  • Sensory experience gets enhanced as children get a chance to explore different textures and sizes of the chalk while holding it in their hands.

  • Creativity is expanded since the kids get a free flow of movement on the chalkboard. Also, the chalk can be erased to create a new piece of art on the space board.

  • Outdoor play was encouraged and it is a well known fact that outdoor activities have incomparable benefits for a child’s mind.

The Series of Steps engaged in?

As per today's theme, the class had to explore three colors including, red, green and yellow. Chalks of these colors were separately placed on three plates (to help the kids in identifying similar colors). Black sheets were given to each kid on the table. The facilitators showed the kids how to do the task in four simple steps, including, Picking the chalk from the plates, scribbling it on the sheet, putting the chalk back in the plate and finally using our fingers to smudge the chalk over the black sheet.

How did it go? (Finally!)

Today, most of the kids sat down at the floor to hear what the educator had to say. They had their agency in scribbling whatever and however they wanted to. Aaradhya chose to dab the chalk and make dots on the sheet which many other kids mirrored once the educator pointed that action out. They were prompted to make circles and straight lines as well. It was great to witness that most of the kids followed the four-step series on hearing the instruction once. They were also introduced with the concept that ‘if we pick something from one place, we should also put that thing back there after its usage’ and so they did keep the chalks back on the plates on request after scribbling and before smudging. Color recognition was present in a few kids for now.
