Welcome to another instalment of ‘A Book About Me’ – by the Arthlings of Arth Hours!
Our Arthlings are in the process of discovering their identity through activities, games, and play. While the Arthlings have found many things that make each of them unique, they have also discovered many things they have in common!
This year, Friendship Day was observed on the 7th of August. Our facilitators realized there was no better opportunity to honour the emotion that binds us all: Friendship! Read on to know how Arth Hours celebrated in class!

PLANNING AND SETUP

The activity was divided into the following steps:

1. Scarf Friendship Game: Net scarves were kept ready as props for the opening.

2. Class Friendship Collage: A4 sheets in a variety of colours were stuck in the form of a grid on brown canvas backing paper. Tempera paint was provided on plates.

3. Making Friendship Bands:
Coloured strips of paper, with double-sided tape fixed on one side, were used to make adjustable wristbands. Circles were also cut from coloured paper. Stickers were printed with pictures of the students and facilitators. These materials were assembled in trays, along with glue, connector pens and colourful stickers for decoration.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Scarf Friendship Game: Sonai Didi began with a fun dance game! The Arthlings separated into pairs, and each pair shared a colourful scarf made of netting. Yuvaan (Mehra) partnered with Sharlav, Nitara chose Rishit, while Viaan paired with Priyanka Didi! Sonai Didi then gave directions for a scarf dance! Each team waved their scarf back and forth, up and down, and round and round as a team. At the end, everyone gathered around a large red scarf and used it as a parachute!

Class Friendship Collage: After Work Time, a colourful paper grid appeared on the scene. Priyanka Didi explained that they would be making art on it — all together! Priyanka Didi showed the children how to dip their hands into tempera paint, and press!
The children gathered around the paper, and took turns coating their hands with tempera paint. Each child stamped their handprints on a different A4 sheet, using blue, pink, orange, purple or green paint! Finally, the class collage was photographed by Samir Bhaiya.

The Friendship Collage!

Making Friendship Bands: When the Arthlings arrived at the tables, Auindrilla Didi and Sonai Didi were ready with materials to make friendship bands! The facilitators showed the children how to make a band, by sticking a circle to a paper strip, and then adding the sticker of their friend on top!
Each Arthling decided on recipients for their friendship bands. Yuvaan (Bhopalka) wanted to make a band for Auindrilla Didi! Ayansh made a band for all the facilitators, where he stuck all of their pictures. Dhriya wanted to make a band for her little sister! The Arthlings decorated their bands with stickers, and then it was time to exchange bands!

OUTCOME AND FUTURE

While previous instalments of this series have focused on individuality, this one put an emphasis on community! The children were encouraged to reflect on the people around them, and their place in the Arth Hours family. By understanding these connections, our Arthlings move towards a better understanding of themselves.
