Welcome to Day 4 of ‘My Emotions’! The children are learning to identify different emotions through the use of art and play. Roleplay and puppetry are important languages in a child’s early understanding of emotion. Read on to know how our Arthlings made a little buddy to help them express themselves!

PLANNING AND SETUP

The activity was divided into the following steps:

1. Making My Sock Puppet: Trays were arranged with the following materials: white socks, bindis, dot stickers, felt pens, glue, plastic straws, and emoticon stickers.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Making My Sock Puppet: The children gathered around the tables to be introduced to some new friends — sock puppets. After becoming acquainted with the puppets made by the educators, the Arthlings geared up to make their own. Each child picked a white sock to wear on their hand. The children added eyes, noses and eyebrows using bindis, dot stickers and felt pens. When it came to adding a mouth, each child made a decision regarding what emotion the puppet would display. Mouths were added using felt pen or bendy straws. Some of the Arthlings named their puppets; Arya and Dhriya both named their puppets Mia! At the end of the activity, the children identified emoticon stickers to match the expression on their sock puppets.

OUTCOME AND FUTURE

Dolls and puppets can be important vessels for emotional exploration in the early years. Puppets can be an outlet for emotions that are too big to express, and can even encourage empathy and understanding between children.
Don’t forget to join us in our next instalment for more fun socio-emotional learning!
